Two young women, whom authorities believe were sisters, were shot when arguing with a man in a Friendswood-area neighborhood on Monday night, leaving one of them dead.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said the other woman shot in the 4700 block of Backenberry was rushed to the hospital in fair but critical condition.

Deputies received a call of a shooting in progress at about 7:30 p.m. They arrived at an intersection where the two women, who are believed to be 18 and 20 years old, were found with apparent gunshots.

Investigators believe some sort of altercation took place with an unknown male, who may have driven away in a gray sedan, Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez added that the victims were of South Asian descent.

It’s not immediately known which of the women died.

Other details, including a suspect description and how the suspect and victims knew each other, were not immediately disclosed.

An already exhausted sheriff spoke at the scene as his agency investigated a young woman’s death, as well as a deputy’s killing.

“It’s been a violent two days here in our community. So I just want to ask for community support as we have to go through this difficult time together,” Gonzalez said.

Anyone with information on what happened, or may have seen something at the time of the shooting, is urged to contact HCSO’s Homicide Division at 713-274-9100 or Crime Stoppers 713-222-TIPS (8477).
