A woman was hospitalized after being shot during a disturbance in southwest Houston on Friday, according to police.

The Houston Police Department responded to the incident at about 3:45 p.m. along Beechnut Street. News helicopters flew over the scene of an apartment complex where a heavy police presence surrounded the area.

HPD Lt. Larry Crowson said an officer who first arrived at the scene saw the shooter take out a gun and fire at the woman.

Crowson said gunfire was heard during the officer’s call, so multiple officers were called out to the scene.

The responding officer was able to put a tourniquet on the victim before she was taken to the hospital in stable condition, Crowson said.

The suspect is not in custody and is described as a Black male with no shirt wearing blue sweatpants. Crowson said he may be the victim’s current or ex-boyfriend.

The suspect reportedly ran into a nearby apartment complex, where officers set up a perimeter. He said it appears the complex is 50% vacant, so there are many places the suspect could be hiding in.
