A man is dead after shooting his wife and daughter and then himself in a neighborhood near Highway 6 in west Houston on Friday, police said.

The deadly shooting happened at about 5:30 a.m. outside of a townhome in the 13400 block of Preston Cliff Court.

The couple’s 13-year-old daughter was found outside the home when they arrived, officers said.

When police entered the home, an officer noticed one of the victim’s hands under the door, signaling for help. As officers were about to make their presence known, they heard a single gunshot go off.

Once entering the room, police said they found a middle-aged man dead with a gunshot wound. They also found two women alive but injured. The man’s wife had a gunshot wound to the head, and her daughter, who is in her late 20s, had a gunshot wound to the arm.

The women were taken to a hospital and are expected to survive.

“We haven’t had a chance to review body camera video, but we’re hearing officer accounts and their thought process as they worked through, possible tunnel vision, auditory exclusion, all the things that cause physical challenges,” Assistant Chief Megan Howard with HPD said.

Police have not yet released any of their names. It remains unclear what led up to the shooting.

It’s unclear who called 911, but Howard said it appears one of the victims inside the home made the call.

News helicopters were first on scene and captured video of heavy police presence. The street has been restricted, so drivers are urged to avoid the area if possible.
